Project Overview

Storeus is an online marketplace based in the United Arab Emirates designed to connect consumers with a wide range of products and services while helping businesses expand their digital reach. The goal was to build a seamless shopping experience that saves time, builds trust, and supports long-term marketplace growth.

As the UX/UI Designer, I led the end-to-end design of the platform across web and mobile. My focus was on translating an early-stage marketplace vision into a scalable product experience that simplifies product discovery, supports sellers, and enables efficient transactions.

The Challenge

The goal was to launch a competitive online marketplace for the UAE market while the product was still at an early stage of definition. The backend infrastructure had limitations that made it difficult to replicate the advanced features seen in leading marketplaces. The challenge was to design a scalable and intuitive user experience that could:

  • Establish a strong foundation for long-term product growth
  • Balance business objectives with user expectations
  • Deliver a functional marketplace within tight timelines
  • Work effectively within existing technical constraints

The Solution

By redesigning the core shopping and seller journeys, I transformed Storeus into a streamlined marketplace experience. Through Lean UX iterations, improved product discovery, and a scalable design system, the platform evolved into a faster, more intuitive experience that drove marketplace growth and higher conversions.

The Process

A focused, outcome-driven design process was used to transform the marketplace vision into a launch-ready product. The approach emphasized rapid iteration and close collaboration with stakeholders to define user flows, validate interface patterns, and ensure alignment between design decisions and business goals.

The Strategic Process

Market Benchmarking

To define a competitive baseline, I conducted a comparative audit of regional and global leaders like Noon.com and Amazon.ae. The goal was to identify the UX patterns that local shoppers trust while uncovering opportunities to streamline the experience.

  • The Discovery Standard: High-growth marketplaces prioritize "frictionless discovery." I analyzed their search heuristics to ensure Storeus could match the speed of market leaders.
  • Trust Architecture: By auditing how competitors handle seller ratings and product transparency, I identified the specific trust signals necessary to convert a hesitant shopper into a repeat buyer.
  • Cognitive Load Optimization: I observed that over-engineered filtering often hinders exploration. This validated my focus on "functional simplicity" prioritizing a lean, high-speed navigation system.

Defining Core User Needs

To scale the Storeus marketplace, I facilitated stakeholder workshops and marketplace audits to align the dual needs of our ecosystem. We identified that growth was being throttled by friction on both sides of the transaction.

  • For Shoppers: Priority was placed on frictionless discovery and trust-building architecture. Users needed to find products instantly and feel confident in third-party sellers through transparent data and clear product details.
  • For Sellers: The focus was on operational efficiency. We identified a need for intuitive listing tools and a streamlined onboarding flow to reduce the "time-to-first-sale" and lower the barrier to entry.
  • The Unified Goal: Ensuring a high-velocity transaction experience that felt reliable for both parties.

Wireframing

Early wireframes were created to define layout structure, navigation patterns, and key user flows before moving into visual design, ensuring a clear and intuitive shopping experience.

Design System

To maintain consistency across platforms, I created a design system that defined typography, color hierarchy, and reusable components, ensuring a cohesive brand experience across the website and mobile app.

Final Design

The final cross-platform architecture translates massive marketplace inventory into a high-trust, frictionless journey. By anchoring the web and mobile experience in functional simplicity, this redesign directly catalyzed a 2,900% increase in daily orders.

Impact

The marketplace transformation was a multi-year journey of continuous optimization. Starting from zero orders at launch, I led the UX evolution through web-first responsive design, iterative improvements, and eventual native mobile app development, scaling the platform to sustainable marketplace operations.

  • Scaled from 0 to 5,000+ monthly orders within 3 years through continuous UX optimization and iteration
  • Achieved 9% sustained conversion rate by streamlining checkout and mobile experience
  • Built foundation for consistent month-over-month growth demonstrating product-market fit in competitive UAE market
  • Successfully launched the native mobile app, reaching 100+ downloads and establishing a high-retention channel for repeat customers.
  • Reduced customer support tickets related to checkout and navigation

Learnings

This project reinforced that sustainable marketplace growth comes from continuous iteration, not one-time redesigns. Starting with a pragmatic mobile-first responsive web approach (before native app resources were available) Let us capture 70%+ mobile traffic immediately and validate patterns faster.

Designing for a two-sided marketplace requires balancing friction reduction for both shoppers AND sellers simultaneously. Simplified vendor onboarding drove seller growth, while streamlined checkout drove conversions, creating a sustainable flywheel. If I could do it again, I'd implement robust analytics from day one to better quantify design impact with hard metrics, rather than relying primarily on qualitative validation methods.
